Virginia Governor Ralph Northam visited several schools across the state this week as part of a tour to promote Computer Science Education Week.
Kristen Johnson is Albert Hill’s Business and IT instructor. She teaches computer skills and keyboarding, and says she sees her students overcome initial anxieties about computer science every day in the classroom. “Oh I can do this, it’s not as difficult as I thought it was, and you kinda see the light bulbs and the excitement and passion turn on.”
During his visit, Governor Ralph Northam said his administration wants to see young people begin to think about computer science as a viable career option at young ages, with learning opportunities starting in kindergarten. “Learning how to code at an early age and really preparing our youth for these twenty first century jobs.”
Northam says funding for these initiatives will be an important part of his upcoming budget that he’ll release within the next two weeks.
