U.S. Senate Votes Federal Recognition for Six Virginia Tribes

The six tribes are the Chickahominy, The Eastern Chickahominy, the Upper Mattaponi, the Rappahannock the Monacan and the Nansemond Tribes.

University of Richmond Law Professor Carl Tobias, “So this means that tribes will be eligible for federal funds for housing, education and medical care, which are critically important.”

Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine forced a surprise vote on the bill yesterday (1/11) by unanimous consent and Warner said this is the day we get things right on a civil rights basis, a moral basis and a fairness basis. “There are 500 federally recognized tribes, so it has been a long time coming. All that is needed now is the President’s signature,” said Warner.
