Richmond International Airport is getting a new cut-rate airline, more options for Florida destinations, and is approaching its all-time high record for passenger service.
Spirit Airlines will begin daily non-stop service to both Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International and Orlando International beginning March 15, 2018. And Troy Bell at RIC says it will feature low fares. “I’ve heard a fare this morning for members of the $9 Fare Club, below $30 as an introductory fare.”
Jet Blue already has twice daily flights to both cities, and Allegiant offers twice-weekly flights to Orlando from RIC, which this year, has almost regained all the passengers lost following the 2008 recession. “Close enough that you can think about it,” says Bell.
It has been a long road back from the all-time high of over 3.6 million passengers in 2007. “Certainly with news such as this today from Spirit Airlines, if we don’t do it this year, 2018 is very likely,” added Bell.
He says if the new routes are successful, Spirit could offer other destinations in the future.
