The Reverend Al Sharpton appeared alongside other faith leaders in Richmond, Virginia this morning. They called on Virginia Governor Ralph Northam and Attorney General Mark Herring to resign after both admitted to appearing in black face in the 1980’s.
Sharpton spoke to a packed chapel of students at Virginia Union University, a historically black college just miles from the capitol.
Sharpton says Democrats have no other option but to call for the resignation of the governor and attorney general. Florida’s Republican Secretary of State Michael Ertle stepped down for a similar scandal last month.
“We can not have one standard, where we stood and told them that Ertle had to go in Florida as a Republican, and give a pass to Democrats in Virginia.”
He and other interfaith leaders also called for a national dialogue on the continuing legacy of racism.
