A new report released today says Virginia falls short in staffing for school counselors, social workers, psychologists and nurses.
The Commonwealth Institute for Fiscal Analysis says while student enrollment has increased by 57 thousand in eight years, those positions have dropped by 2300 and it compromises a positive climate and school safety.
“Safety is certainly about having secure buildings," said Rachael Deane, Legal Aid Justice Center, “but it’s also about making sure students needs are met. Students feel safe when they are free from harassment and free from bullying. They feel safe when they have access to trusted adults.”
The report wants higher staffing standards as recommended by the State Board of Education.
