The Democratic and Republican parties announced their candidates today (8/9) to fill an open House of Delegates seat. An upset by Democrats would transform the legislature.
The resignation of Delegate Greg Habeeb makes the Eighth District a must-win for Republicans. They control the House by just a single vote.
“I think it opens the door for debate about real issues,” said Carter Turner, the Democratic nominee. He’s a religious studies professor turned fundraiser with Radford University.
“Democrats are enthused, they’re angry about the direction this country is going, and they’re doing the work to make change.”
The Republican nominee, Joe McNamara, owns two ice cream shops and sits on the Roanoke County Board of Supervisors.
Republicans have won most elections in the district by double-digit margins.
