NAACP 163 Trump Federal Court Nominees Include Only Four African-Americans

The United States Senate Judiciary Committee this week approved 44 Trump nominees to fill vacancies in federal courts. Richmond’s Fourth Circuit nominee has been controversial. First, some said 36-year old Allison Jones Rushing lacked judicial experience. Now NAACP President Derrick Johnson says she would diminish the court’s diversity. “She will replace Allison Duncan, the only African American female on the Fourth Circuit.” Carl Tobias Law Professor at the University of Richmond “Johnson expressed concern that only four of 163 Trump nominees was African American.” Rushing’s nomination now goes to the full Senate for a confirmation vote, which he says could be close. As to diversity in the Fourth: “Since 2001 there have been African Americans on the Court and there are presently three African Americans, and Chief Judge Roger Gregory is an African American.”
