The Amargue Bachata Quintet with Andre Veloz performs live on the Altria Stage Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m., and you can hear that performance broadcast on 88.9 WCVE. Amargue means “bitterness,” and in the context of bachata, it’s describing the bitterness and pain of unrequited love.
Bachata was music of the working class, traditionally sung by men who lived in the countryside and barrios of the Dominican Republic. As a female bachata singer, Andre Veloz defies traditional conventions and tries to bring recognition and respect to what she sees as a neglected and marginalized artform. 88.9 WCVE’s Peter Solomon reports.
