The Central Virginia Wind Symphony presents the 14th annual Holiday Spectacular this coming weekend. Having co-founded the ensemble in 2005, I’ve had the pleasure of working with our region’s most talented high school musicians as their Music Director and Conductor. Our mission is simple: highlight and support our local school music programs, while giving these amazing students an opportunity to shine in a professional-like environment.

The Central Virginia Wind Symphony is comprised of the most talented high school musicians across Central Virginia. Participants come from schools in the City of Richmond, Henrico, Hanover, Chesterfield and Goochland Counties, as well as north to Stafford County and south to the Tri-Cities.

Rex Richardson Our guest soloist for this program is Rex Richardson, hailed in classical circles as “among the very best trumpet soloists in the world today” (International Trumpet Guild) and in jazz as “a standout soloist with the power, range and flexibility to rival Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw.” (DownBeat Magazine)  Rex is based right here in central Virginia, he serves as Professor of Trumpet and Jazz Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University.  He has collaborated with countless legendary artists and ensembles, including Brian Blade, Benny Carter, Boston Brass, Ray Charles, Mike Clarke, Dave Douglas, Kurt Elling, Carl Fontana, Aretha Franklin, Wycliffe Gordon, Stefon Harris, Conrad Herwig, Dave Holland, Dave Liebman, Keith Lockhart, James Morrison, Jimmy Owens, Jim Pugh, Chris Potter, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Arturo Sandoval, Bobby Shew, Allen Vizzutti, Bill Watrous, and Steve Wilson.  We’re thrilled to have Rex share his knowledge and amazing talents with our ensemble this weekend!

I hope you’ll come out and enjoy the sounds of the holiday season, while supporting our local high school musicians. The December 9th concert will be recorded for broadcast on WCVE Music (93.1 and 107.3) on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
