Coming Up Next...

Virginia Currents is for the whole family! If you are a longtime citizen of the Commonwealth, there’s always the familiar and the sentimental – the scenes of your childhood – people from your past and stories that make you proud to be part of our glorious state. For children, the program offers the chance to learn about home and place. For parents, it’s an opportunity to share your pride in the natural beauty and  culture of your community.

The 19th season of this award-winning newsmagazine series is produced in the studios of Commonwealth Public Broadcasting.

Virginia Currents has won the coveted 2009 Gabriel Award for “A Virginia Currents Thanksgiving.” The half-hour Virginia Currents program received this top recognition in the local television category, among a national field of entries. Introduced by Catholic media professionals, the Gabriel Award recognizes the uplifting and inspiring stories of film, radio, and television.

Virginia Currents This Month

July 1
VC #1617e We meet a woman who finds out about her father’s Nazi past. Then we meet songwriter Ida Callahan, who will steal your heart with every song she sings.

July 8
VC #1624e We make our way to Natural Bridge and discover the mystery and magic of Professor Cline and his enchanted, some say haunted, castle. Then we journey to Virginia Beach and experience Yoga on the Beach.

July 15
VC #1625e Virginia Currents spotlights an outreach project for rehabilitated convicts. “Boaz and Ruth” provides them an opportunity to return to the communities they once betrayed and make a positive life for themselves and others. Then, we travel to the Eastern Shore of Virginia to the town of Painter where we meet visionary folk artist Daniel Doughtey. Though his colors are simple, when they meet the canvass they create a complex representation of things past.

July 22
VC #1626e We meet Thor, a horse with an artificial leg, who travels the state and shows handicapped children that they too can live without their arm or leg. Then we go to Floyd County and see how horse logging can help the environment.

July 29
We re-broadcast our special about the Virginia Tech shootings.
