Martha Speaks Reading Buddies
On June 25, the Community Idea Stations’ Ready To Learn Program welcomed 36 enthusiastic youngsters to begin the Martha Speaks Reading Buddies Program and to tour the station. The students are from the Summer Learning Program at CrossRoads Christian Academy. That program instills a sense of core values as well as maintains academic skills during the summer. The children are expected to perform some community service.
In keeping with those goals, the students will be participating in the Martha Speaks Reading Buddies Program for six weeks. The older Big Buddies will mentor the younger Little Buddies during six one-on-one sessions. The objective is to build vocabulary and reading skills. During each session, the students will be introduced to four new vocabulary words. They will watch a Martha Speaks episode which focuses on those vocabulary words. That is followed by a correlated book reading, journal writing, and an activity. The Big Buddies have to prepare and carry out their lesson just as a teacher does for a class, thus fulfilling their community service requirement. The Little Buddies have to perform their tasks to the best of their ability. After each lesson is completed, the Little Buddies get to keep the book and take it home for their personal library.
The Community Idea Stations' Ready To Learn Program provided books for both the Little Buddies and the Big Buddies. “Several research studies have found that augmenting traditional classroom instruction with one-on-one interventions, such as a reading buddies program, is a powerful combination that can accelerate students’ oral vocabulary gains.
