The Teachings of Jon

The Teachings of Jon is an insightful, soul-searching and funny documentary about a brother named Jon, a 40-year old man, severely and profoundly affected by Down Syndrome. He has an IQ of 20, doesn’t talk, and earns less than $13.00 a year. Although Jon may never accomplish much in this world, he has an important purpose here...not necessarily to learn, but to teach.
The program celebrates Jon exactly as he is, rather than focusing on changing Jon to fit into the world. From the opening shot, the film offers an up close and personal look at the realities of living with someone with severe mental retardation. The Teachings of Jon uncovers how this “family secret,” locked away in an institution for the first seven years of his life, became the family treasure. While entertaining, this inspirational story of one family’s journey is also about honesty and redemption, acceptance and growth that offers hope to others.

My grandparents have cared for my uncle with down syndrome with the same morals, values and respect as you all have. They are now in their late 80's and finally have given my mother and father full custody. It wasn't until they were physically unable to do it, did this happen. Tonight it felt as I watched the story about my uncle Cengiz Durupinar. He has made our family who we are. He has taught us about love, laughter and life. If he chose to teach us, he has mastered his ultimate purpose for life as we are family because of him. I am so proud and full of love after watching your story too. They are sooooo special arent they? Thank you for sharing your story. I wish their was a way I could share my grandparents story. Xoxox you uncle Dino!!!!!!

I have just watched the documentary and was very touched by the content. I thought that the film was so touching and cute. My heart just goes out to those without love in thier hearts for these teachers of the soul. I just want to say thanks to Jon and his family for sharing this personal story with all of us. My wife and I could just feel the love exhibited in the film and we both cried during the film.
Thanks again, and God Bless!
