Water Bottle Rockets: Going for the World Record

Thu, 07/05/2012 - 10:21am -- WCVE

Visitors at the Science Museum of Virginia attempted to help set a Guinness World Record for water bottle rocket launches on July 4th. The Science Museum of Virginia teamed up with the joint NASA and University of Central Lancashire in an effort to set the world record for the most number of water rockets launched in one day, along with young rocket enthusiasts from around the country. Visitors were encouraged to bring two empty two liter soda bottles to decorate and launch. The results will be sent in to the organizers.

Laura Cramer for the Science Museum of Virginia says it is both fun and science – illustrating Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion. His third law states that for every action (force) in nature there is an equal and opposite reaction. Sir Isaac Newton first presented his three laws of motion in the “Principia Mathematica Philosophiae Naturalis” in 1686.
