Go Green and Help the Air We Share

The air we breathe is one of our most precious resources. Take a deep breath. Now, let it out. Doesn’t that feel good? That oxygen in the air travels into our lungs and keeps our heart beating. Most of the time we don’t even notice! And sometimes, we actually take our air for granted! We shouldn’t. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CD), the prevalence of asthma increased from 7.3% in 2001 to 8.4% in 2010, when 25.7 million people were diagnosed with asthma.

Poor air quality can cause inflammation and irritation of the lungs and make breathing difficult, particularly for children, senior citizens and people with respiratory diseases. But did you know that poor air quality harms animals, plants, and ecosystems? High pollution levels can damage leaves on trees and crops, reducing growth rates and crop yields and increasing our vulnerability to diseases, pests, and harsh weather.

Going green is something that each of us can do to make a lasting impact

RideFinders is Central Virginia’s award winning rideshare program with a commitment to improving the region’s air quality, reducing traffic congestion, and promoting economic development and sustainability through the use of smart transportation methods. The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and RideFinders have recently partnered to help the environment through voluntary efforts such as ride-sharing, teleworking and other green strategies to ensure clean air for all Virginians.

How can you “go green?” You can start by talking with your family about developing and improving good environmental habits that will help improve air quality. Carpooling, taking the bus, walking, riding your bike and vanpooling are examples of green transportation choices that work. Kids, Team RideFinders Clean Air heroes are here to help you learn what it means to be green and help the air we all share. Click here to download the Team RideFinders: Clean Air Heroes comic book.

The RideFinders website includes all kinds of information on green strategies that we can use to help our environment. You'll find a daily Ozone alert and even meet people like Bike Boy who encourage us to bike to work for fun and to improve our health.

You can also take the RideFinders Go Green. Get Green. Pledge. The pledge is a simple but important step in encouraging everyone to come together and commit to helping air quality by making smart commute choices, conserving resources, and reducing waste at home, at work, and during your commute.

So join your friends- be smart, go green and help the air we share!
