There’s lots of good music programming on our stations this week. On television we have American Masters: Cab Calloway: Sketches, which documents the singer/bandleader's career and legacy (Friday 3/2 at 9:00 p.m. on WCVE PBS). Elvis Costello appears on Live from the Artists Den (Thursday 3/1 at 11:00 p.m. on WCVE PBS). Sun Studio Sessions airs back to back episodes. First up at 10:00 p.m. is Southern rock band Ha Ha Tonka followed at 10:30 p.m. with husband-and-wife team Over The Rhine (Friday, 3/2 on WCVW PBS). Do not miss up and coming Americana star Hayes Carll as he makes his Austin City Limits debut (Friday 3/2 at 11:30 p.m. on WCVE PBS). Veteran songwriter Robert Earl Keen also appears in this episode of ACL.

On WCVE Public Radio this weekend, Joe Ely and Jimmie Dale Gilmore & the Wronglers will be among the performers on Mountain Stage. Jimmie Dale Gilmore & the Wronglers had one of the best albums of 2011, so that should be a good performance. Listen in on Saturday, 3/3 at 8:00 p.m. The Thistle and Shamrock features emerging roots music from Wales on Sunday 3/4 at 1:00 p.m. The Folk Sampler continues the Celtic theme with a program entitled “Celtic Ladies: Those Stunning Voices” (Sunday 3/4 at 2:00 p.m. on WCVE Public Radio).

From the web, here’s a cool video of Jim James of My Morning Jacket performing Woody Guthrie’s “Empty Bed Blues” from a new album entitled New Multitudes. And remember The Cranberries? The Irish group recently did a Tiny Desk Concert.

Local concerts this week include bluegrass group Steve Smith and Hard Road, performing at Ashland Coffee and Tea on Thursday, 3/1. On that same night, veteran blues rockers Hot Tuna are doing an acoustic show at the Jefferson Theater in Charlottesville. The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen hosts An Evening of Celtic Music featuring two excellent Virginia-based bands: Poisoned Dwarf and Handsome Molly. Finally, soft-spoken rockers the Cowboy Junkies are going to be at the Jefferson Theater in Charlottesville on Saturday, 3/3. Note: they are neither cowboys nor junkies, just Cowboy Junkies!
