VCU Will Lead Evaluation of Virginia’s Addiction Recovery Program

The Department of Medical Assistance Services has chosen VCU to lead a five year evaluation of Virginia’s new Addiction Recovery Treatment Services program - ARTS.

Dr. Peter Cunningham, a professor in the Department of Health Behavior and Policy heads the evaluation team. He said VCU was chosen for a number of reasons.

"Both our knowledge and familiarity with state health policy, in particular policies that affect the Medicaid population. But we also have a lot expertise within VCU and especially within the school of medicine."

The immediate goals, he said, are to increase the capacity of the system and get more Medicaid members into treatment.

"More treatment is going to lead to better outcomes so we should see lower prevalence of substance abuse disorders, fewer overdoses, and fewer overdose deaths."

Finally, he added, to adopt models of care delivery and coordination among providers.
