A new VCU study finds affordable housing and available jobs are not in proximity in the Richmond metro area.
The report, from the Wilder School’s Center for Urban and Regional Analysis, is, according to lead researcher Tom Jacobson, the first time this pattern has been analyzed.
"There’s about 67,000 jobs in what we call the suburban donut, the established suburbs of Henrico and Chesterfield where there are many more jobs than there are housing units."
At the same time, he said, affordable housing is located along the Chippenham corridor, southern Jeff Davis Hi-way, and east of the city.
"We hope to make this a factor for people to consider, both in siting new affordable housing units and also in terms of economic development strategies that are used by the localities."
