VCU Rice Center Launches Smart Buoy in the James

The VCU Rice Rivers Center has launched a smart buoy in the James River not far from the Harrison Bridge. It’s topped with solar panels and filled with sensors.

Dr. Greg Garman, director of the center, explained that every 15 minutes, the buoy sends very high quality data in real time.

In addition, Garman said, this buoy joins 16 others that are part of the Chesapeake Bay Interpretive Buoy System, answering important questions.
