A VCU researcher has received a five-year, $2.5 million dollar federal grant to help young people with intellectual and developmental disabilities find and hold jobs in the real world.
Beginning next Spring, 20 young people from the Richmond area will be recruited, trained and integrated into the workforce.
“There are many people who would like to be employed that are not employed and just need some extra assistance and we can provide that.” Research Director Dr. Katherine Inge says it is the first group of some 160 participants who will help write the book on employment opportunities.
“First question you ask anybody is what do you do, and this makes them a participating member of their community. After five years, they plan a blueprint on what works they will share across the country.”
