Yesterday (9/21) the VCU Department of Family and Community Health Nursing hosted a live Health Chat in recognition of National Sickle Cell Awareness Month. In the U.S., at least 100,000 people, the majority African American, are affected.
For an hour yesterday, chat questions about how to diagnose, treat, and live with sickle cell were answered by Dr. Suzanne Ameringer. She’s involved in a two year study funded by the National Institutes of Health to help adolescents and young adults manage the disease.
The number of people chatting on Facebook or twitter, she said, isn’t as important listening to them and answering the questions they ask.
