The Town of Columbia May Cease to Exist

By the first of the year the little town of Columbia, Virginia may no longer be a town. Columbia is at the spot where the James and Rivanna Rivers converge. Route 6 runs right through it and its been there since 1788. The all-volunteer town council is moving to dissolve Columbia and let it be an unincorporated part of Fluvanna County with no independent government. Members of the council say it will cost a lot more to fix the things that are wrong than the town could raise through taxes. Officials talked about rumors that those in dilapidated homes will be abruptly forced out and that, they said, isn’t going to happen. Kerry Murphy-Hammond, a member the council, told the Daily Progress “at the end of the day it’s what’s best for the town.”
