Dominion Energy shut down one of the two nuclear reactors at the Surry Power Station this week. It is now back on line.
Dominions David Botkins explained that a steam leak was discovered on Tuesday in a valve that pulls samples for the coolant system for testing in the Unit 1 containment building.
"It was certainly not an emergency of any kind. Our repair team made all the necessary repairs and returned the unit back into full service effective this morning."
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission issued a notice of the “hot shutdown,” on Wednesday and classified it as a “non -emergency.” A hot shut down makes it possible to keep the reactor temperature up while repairs are made.
No radiation was released, no one was injured and there were, the commission said, no contamination events.
