Flu Season is coming and the Virginia Department of Health has its usual message that all people six months and older receive their annual influence vaccine. This year, they are targeting a surprising group.
They are urging healthcare workers, to protect themselves and their patients, by getting the vaccine as soon as it becomes available.
Sarah Lineberger, Virginia Department of Health said, “In Virginia, there is no statewide mandate that requires healthcare workers to receive an annual influenza vaccine.”
She says last flu season 40 percent of Virginia’s hospitals did not meet the national goal of having 90% of their workers vaccinated, with some hospitals having as few as 50%.
“It is a logical goal, because health care workers should get vaccinated every year, because it protects those around them especially patients they may work with that have chronic disease and may be more susceptible to influenza complications.”
