Petersburg and Colonial Heights Newspapers Sold

The Progress–Index and The Colonial Voice have new ownership. The Petersburg and Colonial Heights newspapers have been acquired by New Media Investment Group. New Media owns GateHouse Media, LLC, among the largest publishers of locally based print and online media in the country, and they will manage both of the tri-cities papers.

The Petersburg paper traces its roots back to 1865 and has been publishing as the Progress Index since the 1920s when the Index Appeal and Evening Progress merged. The current owner, Times Shamrock Communications, bought the two in 1997.

On the PI website, CEO George Lynnet, Jr. said he was sad to see friends and co workers go but was happy to see them join an exciting and innovative company.
