Late Tuesday evening (11/7), Democrats had decisive victories in about a dozen House of Delegates races.
State party spokesperson Katie Baker described the pick-ups as a “rejection” of Republicans from Gillespie down the ballot. “I could barely keep up with all the press releases we were putting out, just victory after victory kept coming in.”
Baker says Democrats declared victories in 16 races, even though some of them will likely undergo a recount. If the Democrats pick up 17 seats after final vote tallies, they will hold control of the General Assembly’s larger chamber come next year’s legislative session.
House Republicans called Tuesday a “difficult night” with an unexpected outcome. In a written statement, caucus spokesperson Matt Moran said the group will be monitoring the contested races closely.
