National Weather Service Issues Red Flag Fire Watch Warnings; Forestry Officials Urge Caution

The National Weather Service has issued Red Flag fire watch warnings for Central Virginia North this afternoon. It means the potential for wildfires is imminent.

Jeff Orrock at the National Weather Service said, “Fires could get out of control pretty quickly if there are some ongoing, especially across Central Virginia.”

The Department of Forestry reports fires this afternoon in Halifax, Spotsylvania and Fauquier and Fred Turck, Virginia Department of Forestry says it is warm, windy and dry and there is a lot of debris on the ground.

“We’ve had a lot of late storms, with a lot of wind and a lot of trees that feel down, and also with the late cold temperatures we’ve had we’re really behind. There’s a lot of grass that isn’t greened up, the trees haven’t greened up, the flowers are not blooming.”

Red Flag warning for Central Virginia is until eight tonight. The Four PM burning ban is still in effect, but he asks people to postpone open burning until we get more rain, maybe this weekend.
