McAuliffe Calls Special Election For Cantor's Seat

Governor Terry McAuliffe has called a special election to replace Congressman Eric Cantor for November 4th, the same day as the general election for U.S. Senate. The special election would allow the victor to be seated immediately, giving the seventh district representation during the lame-duck session.

Republican Dave Brat an economics professor from Randolph Macon College will face Democrat Jack Trammel, another professor from the same school, as well as Libertarian candidate James Carr in the heavily Republican 7th district. The special election would give seniority to the 7th district victor over other newly elected members sworn in in January.

Cantor will resign from Congress August 18th. Former House members are banned from lobbying the congress for one year after their service has ended.
