Martinsville Has Highest Unemployment, Again. Richmond Region Is Flat

Martinsville in Southwest Virginian was a prosperous furniture and textile town in the middle 20th century, but saw those jobs go overseas, and never fully recovered. It recorded a seasonal unadjusted unemployment rate of 11.7 percent, up slightly from February, but still better than last year’s 14.7 percent. Arlington County and the City of Falls Church had the lowest jobless rate at 3.5 percent. Richmond was unchanged at 5.5. The area had 639,200 people at work in March. It is approaching, but has not yet reached the 643 thousand who were employed in 2007, just before the recession.
