The lawyer defending George Huguely, the former University of Virginia lacrosse player convicted of the beating death of his ex-girlfriend, wants to change the narrative in the upcoming civil trial.
A jury called it second-degree murder, but attorney Matthew Green says recent investigations have found neighbors and a medical expert to portray to a less sinister view.
“It was a horrific accident.”
Fighting this $30 million-dollar action, Green hopes to use testimony and forensic evidence to transform perceptions of what happened after his client kicked his way into Yeardley Love’s bedroom.
“While that will not affect the criminal sentence, it’s important that a fuller truth come out.”
Following Wednesday’s (7/20) hearing, Huguely’s mother, Marta Murphy, broke her six-year silence.
“It’s hard to describe in words the loss of Yeardley’s life who we all loved. I also have incredible pain for my son’s incarceration.”
The civil trial is set for March 2017.
