Virginia First Lady Dorothy McAuliffe was joined by U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack and U.S. Secretary of Education John King at Robert E. Lee Elementary School in Petersburg Tuesday (6/7) to give kids nutritious breakfasts to kick off the start of the National Summer Meals Program.
Virginia First Lady Dorothy McAuliffe says losing access to healthy meals when school ends can make the summer full of worry and apprehension. “Unfortunately in Virginia, about 87% of students who rely on free and reduced price school meals, still aren’t able to access a summer meal program each day. We simply can’t expect our kids to thrive and succeed, in or out of school if they’re not sure where their next meal is coming from.”
The first lady’s initiative has signed on 30 new school divisions to participate in the summer food service program for the first time, including Petersburg, for a total of 75 divisions statewide
Last year in Virginia 170,000 more summer meals were served than the year before.
