Dan Rather Says Vitriol for Media Dangerous for Democracy

In Charlottesville last night [04/12], former CBS Evening News anchor Dan Rather says that president’s attacks on media could harm the nation.

Rather recalls when Nixon bashed the press, but he says Trump goes much farther. “And then he attacks the whole idea of journalism. This is new, and it is not normal.”

And not good, he says. “It matters to the country, and here’s why: that a free and independent--and fiercely independent, when necessary--press is the red-beating heart of freedom and democracy.”

The 86-year-old journalist ended on a note of optimism, which cheered listener Terri DiCintio. “I feel like it gives me a little hope that we will, in fact, rebound again.”
