A group of advocates for immigration reform gathered at the state capitol yesterday to urge Congressman Eric Cantor to call a vote on the issue. As Majority Leader, Cantor sets the schedule for the House of Representatives and decides what legislation will go to the floor for debate.
Illinois Congressman Luis Gutierrez joined members of CASA de Virginia. Many at the press conference had pending deportation orders and wore ankle bracelets to ensure that they did not flee immigration officials. Gutierrez said he would not stop fighting until those bracelets were replaced with documents to ensure that those individuals could live and work in the country legally.
Gutierrez says the Republican Party is no longer the dominant party in Virginia because of the growing power and influence of the Latino community. He says that trend will continue until the GOP embraces immigration reform.
