Richmond Musicians Take Center Stage this Thanksgiving on WCVE Public Radio

There are many things for which we give thanks but sometimes those things closest to home are taken for granted or even forgotten.  That is not the case with Grete Dollitz who every year produces a Thanksgiving program that features performances by local musicians. Just wait til you hear what Grete has lined up for you Thursday, November 24th from 11:00 a.m.-3:0 p.m.

Giving Thanks

Giving Thanks

The following is from John Birge, producer of Giving Thanks. This program will air on Friday, November 25th beginning at 1:00 p.m. on WCVE Public Radio.

A steamed-up houseful of noisy cousins. Fancy plates and silver. A lot of food, not a lot of elbow room. As a child, I measured Thanksgiving through these ordinary things. As an adult, I discovered the deeper meaning of Thanksgiving in the unlikeliest of places—a small studio, where I was putting together a radio show.

Box lunch VS Bach's Lunch

A box lunch is always a treat.  It’s like opening a present right in the middle of the work day.  Just watch the next time you’re in a meeting where box lunches are provided.  Everyone is smiling ear to ear as they take out each little "gift" placed in the box just for them.  There’s the wrapped pickle, the mustard and mayo packets, maybe a little pasta salad and the breath mint.  But everyone knows the big moment is when you discover what kind of cookie is at the bottom of your box.

Some Like it Hot – Classical Music for a Hot and Sultry Date Night

Tango

"Hot and sultry" describes summer days, movies like Body Heat, dances like the Argentine Tango, and . . . classical music?

Yes! Classical music is not just for the serene and cerebral music lover. Many of our favorite composers had spouses - and lovers - and deep romantic desires that they expressed in their music. Many of them composed music to woo a lover - or to spark a flame in the heart of the object of their desire - or to describe their own passions. So, how did they do it? What are these hot and sultry pieces? What's out there - beyond Bolero?

Here are 7 to get you started - hot and sultry classical music pieces - perfect for that sizzling night with your beloved:

If you love classical music, then you want to share that love and excitement with the children in your life. But how? How do you introduce children to classical music in a way that helps them feel the humor, the great rhythm, and the emotion in the music without  boring them or making them feel like they're stuck in school? By picking pieces they will love. Children have an innate sense of musicality and rhythm that we adults can nurture. Play music for the kids in your life - and just watch how they react!

WCVE Public Radio's 5th Annual St. Patrick's Day Concert: A Growing Tradition

Uisce Beatha sets up shop at the Single Malt Pub

Did you listen to or attend last Thursday's 5th Annual St. Patrick's Day Live Concert?  What a day!  Here's the scoop.

Richmond's own Irish-American pub band Uisce Beatha held center stage for the fifth year for us in our annual celebration.  My thanks to Jim, Judy, Ed, Sajii and to Dan who although was not able to attend did send green vibes to his bandmates.  The self proclaimed official band of St. Patrick's Day treated the audience to traditional Irish folk songs with their own unique twists often calling on the audience to participate in the music making.

Opera Talk 2011

Dr. Glenn Winters

Opera Talk is a one hour program that airs on the Wednesday before every Richmond premiere of an opera. My in-studio co-host is Dr. Glenn Winters, Virginia Opera’s Community Outreach Musical Director. If you think opera is stuffy and high brow I highly encourage you to listen to our program. You’ll quickly learn that opera is anything but stuffy. Glenn will guide you through the sometimes convoluted plots found in operas all the while keeping you in stitches and giving you an appreciation for the art form. I promise you’ll love it.
