Opera Talk 2011

Opera Talk is a one hour program that airs on the Wednesday before every Richmond premiere of an opera. My in-studio co-host is Dr. Glenn Winters, Virginia Opera’s Community Outreach Musical Director. If you think opera is stuffy and high brow I highly encourage you to listen to our program. You’ll quickly learn that opera is anything but stuffy. Glenn will guide you through the sometimes convoluted plots found in operas all the while keeping you in stitches and giving you an appreciation for the art form. I promise you’ll love it.
Coming up for 2011: Wagner’s The Valkyrie, February 23, 2011, at 2:00 PM. All of Wotan’s might cannot prevent the fate that will separate father from daughter. Soar like a Valkyrie on the wind into Wagner’s epic narrative, told with music unmatched in larger-than-life expressive power.
Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, April 6, 2011, at 2:00 PM. This fragile “Butterfly,” willing to sacrifice everything for a man who isn’t worthy of her, is blind to the heartbreak and humiliation awaiting her when Lt. Pinkerton finally returns. In one of the most emotionally shattering conclusions in all of opera, a clash of two cultures results in the ultimate sacrifice in the face of dishonor.
