Great program, but I'm curious how the students put themselves "in other peoples' shoes."
The user experience (UX) field practices how to understand people, their behavior, needs and desires, and then how to craft solutions that meet (and exceed) these aspects. We in UX spend time first understanding people and their context, then we design buildable solutions to meet goals and then needs. Empathy is the primary skill of a UX professional.
I'm concerned that engineers, by training, focus on materials and not humans. As Steve Jobs famously said, "Design isn't just how it looks or feels....it's about how it works." I'd love to see JMU partner with professionals in the UX field to highlight that engineering alone won't bring solutions about.
