Richmond Concert Band's 40th Dogwood Dell 4th of July

Festivities on the 4th of July at Dogwood dell this year mark the 40th consecutive Independence Day performance of the Richmond Concert Band.

I first listened to the Band three years ago, a depressed concert saxophone player, and experienced a spark from the top of Dogwood Dell's seating. The thought came to my mind," I'd love to play with them." As time went on for me the opportunity to talk with Dr. Poland happened, on Virginia's 400th Anniversary. I have been playing ever since yet this year's D.D. 4th I was laid up with a neck injury that prevented me from being on stage yet I exerted the strength to attend. To have a weather controlled performance as we did this year, I heard and saw the band play as they never have. Having the onstage microphones amplified the excellence of the Band as a hole. I listened attentively to parts and the musicians played wonderfully. I'd match our Band with any nationally. There is that much spirit and energy within the members. Thanks so much for broadcasting the notice of the Band's performance on WCVE John.

The saying is true - "No group rises above its leader". The Richmond Concert Band is evidence of this truism. Dr. Poland is capable, committed, challenging and many more superlatives. I am prevented from attending the concerts now because of distance; however my heart longs to be in the audience absorbing the beautiful music and Mark's excellent directing.
