A train hit a pick-up truck in New Kent, killing man

A 51 year old Wakefield man died late Friday morning when his pick up truck was hit by a train in New Kent County.

According to Sargeant Tom Molnar, Virginia State Police, the victim’s name is being withheld because the accident happened on private property.

Molnar:  This incident occurred in the 15000 block of Rockahock Road, which is in the Lanexa area of New Kent County.

There were no injuries among the 125 people on the Amtrak train.

Molnar:  The driver of the pickup truck, who died at the scene, was travelling west on Rockahock Road when he made a left onto a private drive which crosses over the train tracks.

The driver, for some reason, didn’t stop and the train hit the pickup on the passenger side.

Molnar:  The pickup was split into two and the driver was ejected from the pickup, and the railroad crossing there is identified as a railroad crossing with the crossing sign itself.  There is no arm bar, there's no red signal.

Virginia law requires the vehicle operator to stop at least 15 feet prior to the crossing.
