Transfer station groundbreaking in Petersburg
As we reported yesterday, Container First Services will break ground at 10:30 this morning for a transfer station at its rapidly expanding landfill on Industrial Drive, just off Puddledock Road. It is one of the key components of what will be a state of the art refuse facility.
Two years ago, Petersburg was faced with a trash dilemma. Its landfill was nearing capacity and money wasn’t available to expand it. Container First Services offered a solution. They would buy and manage the landfill. The transfer station is a key component.
Moore: I think it puts us in the lead to do new and better things with the landfill as we move into developing our green technology, green types of industries in the city.
Petersburg Mayor Brian Moore explained that he’s delighted to talk trash, especially about a deal that turns trash into cash.
Moore: We receive a dollar for every ton of trash brought into the landfill; as they develop methane gas sales, we'll receive 50 percent of the revenues. The city will also receive 50 percent of the sale of all recycled materials.
By June, CFS expects to be able to handle and recycle a thousand tons of all kinds of refuse every day.
