Workers exposed to ozone were not seriously hurt
Six people who ended up in the hospital after a chemical spill in Petersburg were not seriously hurt.
Emergency crews were called to Boar’s Head Provisions industrial plant on Industry Place just after 5:30 Monday evening. 26 other people who work there had been exposed to an ozone leak.
The chemical is used at Boar’s Head as an accelerator. Depending on how much is inhaled, ozone can cause respiratory problems or even death, according to Petersburg Fire Chief T.C. Hairston.
Only a small amount leaked at the plant and it was back in operation a few hours later. Boar’s Head Provisions is a major player in the wholesale meat industry, with between 250 and 500 employees at seven locations.
