UVA to dedicate 1.5 million dollar electron microscope tomorrow

The University of Virginia has just received a state-of-the-art, 1.5 million dollar electron microscope that can magnify up to two million times. Charles Fishburne has more in this Science Matters report.

Howe:  We're looking at the sort of smallest things that we can see and those are atoms.

Jim Howe, professor in the Material Science and Engineering department, says it can help make metals stronger and lighter for cars and airplanes, and it can make computers faster and more efficient.

Howe:  When we want to design materials for electronics or tiny little devices, this is how we actually see what it is that we make.

The new microscope, one of the most powerful ever built, is a gift from Altria and will be used to push the limits in nanotechnology and inspire the next generation of scientists and researchers who are studying at the University of Virginia.
