Lynchburg Airport benefits from US Airways fare changes
The Lynchburg Regional Airport was stung by Delta Airline’s decision to leave but pleased that US Airways made some important fare changes.
January passenger traffic out of Lynchburg was down about 19% from December.
Courtney: It was really unprecedented for USAirways to put in place a fare structure that was really designed around a low-fare carrier, low-cost carrier like JetBlue or AirTran that's out of Richmond.
Lynchburg Airport Director Mark Courtney noted that last month’s traffic was still 2% above January of '09 and 42% better than January '08.
Courtney: We're really kinda tied to the fortunes of Richmond as well; you know, Richmond needs to maintain the kind of competitive fare levels they have, quite honestly, to help us keep ours, so I certainly hope that continues.
And, Courtney said:
Courtney: We've been, for quite some time, even before Delta made their announcement, had been in negotiations with the United Express carrier Pinnacle and their affiliate, Colgan Air, for service to Washington-Dulles.
Talks, he added, continue with USAir for service to Philadelphia.
