Richmond City grows for the first time in 40 years
The U.S. Census says Richmond City has increased its population for the first time in 40 years.. Charles Fishburne reports.
For years, people have been fleeing most urban areas, including Richmond. But not anymore.
Cai: Richmond city's grown by 6,424.
Qian Cai (Chien Tsai) is a demographer at UVA’s Weldon Cooper Center. She says that is a 3.25% increase over the 2000 numbers.
Cai: 204,214.
The census numbers also show major increases in Chesterfield, up about 23 percent, Henrico 17% and Hanover up 16%.
Cai: More than 80% of the state population growth occurred in three major metropolitan areas, so 55% of the growth actually in Northern Virginia, 17% in metropolitan Richmond and 10% in Hampton Roads.
Two-thirds of Virginians are Caucasian.
Cai: White 69%, African-American 19%, Asian 5.5%, Hispanic nearly 8%.
