Dominion presents Strong Men & Women Awards
Last night at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Dominion presented its annual Strong Men & Women: Excellence in Leadership Awards.
The ceremony marked the 21st year for the educational series that honors six prominent African-Americans.
Neddenien: It's aimed at helping high school students identify some heroes, people who have the skills, who have the characteristics of leadership.
Dominon’s Karl Neddenien.
Neddenien: The most prominent local people were Lillian Lincoln Lambert, who's the first African-American woman to earn a Harvard MBA, and she's from Mechanicsville; and also, the Honorable Cleo E. Powell. She's the first African-American woman judge in the Virginia Court of Appeals here in Richmond.
A key part of the program is an essay contest for high school students.
Neddenien: Part of the contest is asking students to identify some people they really, really admire and then put together an essay describing why.
The essay winners get a laptop and their school gets a thousand dollars. One of the winners was Starr Shands from Dinwiddie High School.
