Henrico Schools plan to close 8.5 million dollar budget gap
Henrico County schools could cut 37 full-time positions as they try to deal with a multi-million dollar budget gap.
It is a very tight budget. The proposal cuts only a million or so from last year's 402 million-dollar budget, but seven million in increased expenses brings the total budget gap to 8.5 million.
The plan would eliminate 37 full-time positions through attrition, renegotiate some computer contracts, tweak some transportation routes and use more electronic textbooks. It promises minimum impact on positions or curriculum, and while there are no layoffs, there are no raises either, for the third year in a row.
The proposal must be approved by the school board, which still has to hear what the General Assembly has in mind for state funding to localities this year.
