Virginia fourth graders top the nation in science test scores
Results of a national science tests announced yesterday show Virginia public school students are among the highest-achieving in the nation. Charles Fishburne reports.
It is known as the nation’s report card, and it shows Virginia’s fourth graders are in a virtual tie for the highest science achievers in the country.
Wright: What is encouraging about today's news release is that our students are achieving well, based on our existing Standards of Learning.
Dr. Patricia Wright, State Superintendent of Public Instruction. Eighth-graders did well also, coming in seventh in the nation in science scores.
Wright: It validates that we're on the right track, but I would be remiss if I didn't at least acknowledge the achievement gap; you know, while our minority students outperform the nation, anyone who looks at the gap in achievement between white students and black students or Hispanic students should be alarmed, and so we still have a lot of work to do, especially in raising the expectations for all children.
