George Allen launches campaign to regain senate seat
Virginia Republican George Allen has launched his campaign to regain the US Senate seat he lost in 2006.
Allen made the announcement yesterday in an email to suppoters and an online video.
Allen: Today, I'm announcing my candidacy for the US Senate.
The former governor and senator says he will champion sharp spending cuts, an end to federal health care reforms and increased focus on domestic energy, including coal.
Allen: You know me as someone willing to fight for the people of Virginia, and I'd like the responsibility to fight for you again.
Allen told the Associated Press he will run a more disciplined campaign than the one that tainted him with charges of racism in 2006. Allen’s candidacy will thrust him in a primary fight against several candidates to the right of him, and into a possible rematch with Senator Jim Webb, if he decides to run.
