Hopewell’s Police Chief resigns
The Police Chief in Hopewell has resigned after only three years on the job.
Chief Steven Martin had the longest tenure of four police chiefs, including interim leaders, since 2006 in Hopewell.
Once again, disagreements with the office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney are believed to be at the root of his unexpected decision to leave.
The case of Naomi Long’s death and the extradition of her husband from Las Vegas caused a lot of problems. Long was killed in 1964 and Donald Long insisted he had nothing to do with her death. Commonwealth's Attorney Rick Newman based his case on statements made by Long’s second wife, who said he admitted killing Naomi and said she’d testify to that.
Newman charged him with first-degree murder in November. Comments by the Commonwealth’s Attorney about an alleged piece of evidence and responses by the chief began as the case fell apart and Long was released.
