Commission turns down oyster gardens
The Potomac Fisheries Commission has decided against allowing oyster farming along piers in the river.
The Commission felt the so-called oyster gardens would be the same as leasing grounds to private owners.
Executive Secretary Kirby Carpenter said while Virginia allows leasing Potomac oyster grounds, Maryland does not. The two encourage oyster gardening in the bay as a method of improving water quality and to increase the number of oysters, they created the commission.
Michael Warden lives in Colonial Beach and says he was shocked to find out he couldn’t put an oyster garden at his dock.
