Three alarm fire damages Zorba’s Restaurant in Henrico
A well known west end restaurant suffered severe damage in a fire yesterday.
It was a three-alarm fire at Zorba’s in the Tuckernuck Shopping Center off Broad Street in Henrico, just before eight in the morning.
It took fire crews about half an hour to knock down, perhaps an hour to contain. The building’s metal roof kept heat in and helped create a pretty intense fire, according to Henrico Fire Chief Edwin Smith. He added, however, that vents did help draw some of that heat out.
The owner, Isabel Akpinar, told NBC12 the fire apparently started in the kitchen and there was heavy damage in that area. She explained that Zorba’s is her family’s only source of income and that she was devastated to see 15 years of hard work in ashes. Zorba’s, she said, will definitely reopen.
Fire investigators found no evidence of a suspicious cause for the fire, but continued to sift through the debris for evidence for the rest of the day.
