Traffic stop ends in shooting death
State Police are investigating a shooting in Petersburg that involved a city police officer.
The incident happened just before 11:30 Wednesday night.
Hyatt: A Petersburg police officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the 300 block of East Fillmore Street. Steven Lee, a 22-year old resident of Petersburg, was the sole occupant of the vehicle that has been described as a 1986 light blue Toyota.

Hyatt: During that traffic stop, an altercation occurred with the officer and Lee, resulting in the officer being dragged alongside the vehicle as Lee drove away. The officer discharged his weapon, fatally wounding Lee.
The officer’s name is not being released. He is on paid administrative leave.
Hyatt: And that is normal policy and procedure whenever there is an officer-involved shooting.
Petersburg Police asked State Police to handle the investigation.
